/ 5 — Best overall FIFO work sock

The FXD SK-7 is the most engineered work sock available for FIFO workers in Australia. Left/right ergonomic fit, padded footbed, mesh ventilation and wool comfort — it's the one workers switch to and never go back from. If you're getting blisters in steel caps, this is the fix.

Who is the FXD SK-7 for?

The SK-7 is built for workers doing long shifts in steel-cap boots — FIFO workers, miners, tradies and construction workers who are on their feet for 10–12 hours a day. If your current socks are leaving you with blisters, wet feet or socks that bunch up inside the boot, the SK-7 fixes all three.

It's an all-conditions sock — equally at home on a surface mine in WA, an underground operation, a construction site or a heavy industrial plant. If you can only buy one work sock, this is the one.

What makes it different

Most work socks are ambidextrous — the same shape for both feet. The SK-7 has a genuine left and right fit, which means the padding and ribbing sit exactly where each foot needs them. After a few hours in steel caps, that difference is significant. The sock doesn't bunch, shift or create hotspots.

The upper mesh ventilation panel is the other standout feature. Most thick work socks trap heat because the entire sock is the same density. The SK-7 puts breathable mesh on the top of the foot where ventilation matters most, and dense cushioning on the sole where impact happens. It's a smarter construction.

Pros and cons

What we like
  • Left/right fit keeps padding exactly where it's needed
  • Mesh ventilation reduces heat build-up on top of foot
  • Wool yarn adds genuine all-day comfort
  • Doesn't bunch or shift inside steel caps
  • Survives a full 14-day swing
  • $15/pair is fair for the quality
Worth knowing
  • One size (7–12) — doesn't fit smaller feet
  • 24% cotton in the blend — not ideal for extreme heat
  • No customer reviews publicly available online
  • Not Australian made

Specs breakdown

The SK-7's composition is 28% polyester, 24% cotton, 17% wool, 17% acrylic, 12% nylon and 2% lycra. The wool and nylon are the key performers — wool regulates temperature and manages moisture, nylon adds the structural durability that keeps the sock intact after repeated washes.

The 24% cotton is the one compromise. Pure bamboo or merino socks handle extreme heat better — if sweaty feet in 40°+ conditions is your main problem, check out the Steel Blue Bamboo instead. But for all-round conditions across a full swing, the SK-7's blend is well-balanced.

How it performs in steel caps

Steel-cap boots are unforgiving — there's no flex in the toe box and very little cushioning built into the boot itself. The SK-7's padded footbed compensates for this directly. After 12 hours, the padding is still doing its job. The reinforced construction means the sock doesn't compress down to nothing by hour 8 the way cheap work socks do.

The left/right fit is most noticeable in the heel. Standard ambidextrous socks often bunch at the heel cup inside a steel cap. The SK-7 sits flush — no bunching, no friction point, no blister.

Our verdict

The FXD SK-7 is the best all-round work sock for FIFO workers in Australia. The left/right fit alone separates it from everything else at this price point. Buy two 2-packs and you've got enough for a standard swing. If you're still wearing generic cotton socks in steel caps, the SK-7 will feel like a genuine upgrade from the first shift.

Frequently asked questions

Are FXD SK-7 socks worth it for FIFO? +

Yes — the left/right ergonomic fit and mesh ventilation make these the best-engineered work sock available at this price point. If you're spending 12 hours a day in steel caps, they're worth every cent.

What size do the FXD SK-7 come in? +

One size fits AU/UK shoe sizes 7–12. If you're outside that range, check the other picks on our main page — the Bisley 3-pack comes in sizes 6–10 and 11–14.

How do I wash the FXD SK-7? +

Machine wash cold or warm, inside out. Avoid high heat tumble drying — air dry where possible. The wool content means high heat will shrink them over time.

How many pairs do I need for a swing? +

4–5 pairs is enough for a 14-day swing if you have access to site laundry. Two 2-packs of the SK-7 covers you with a pair to spare.

How does the SK-7 compare to other FXD socks? +

FXD describe the SK-7 as "the most comfortable sock in the FXD range." The SK-5 and SK-6 are also worth considering — the SK-5 is 89.6% bamboo (better for extreme heat) and the SK-6 is a 5-pack crew sock with arch support. See our full comparison page for the breakdown.
